Erics Biking Across the State for Cancer Cure That's right. Two of our very own MBA/MS
MIS students, Eric Benovitz and Eric Miller are hard at work
training for their big ride in the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge
(PMC) slated to be held this August 1-2. The PMC is one of the world's biggest bike-a-thon events and is the largest fund-raiser for the Jimmy Fund of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute - supporting cancer research. This year will mark the PMC's 19th year, and the event is expected to draw over 2500 riders and 2000 volunteers. This year's goal is to raise $5.75 million to help find a cure for cancer; since 1980, the PMC has raised over $27 million. Miller and Benovitz will be joining cyclists from all over the country as they convene in New England to participate in this 200 mile, 2 day journey from Sturbridge- to-Provincetown, MA. The first day the cyclists ride approximately 110 miles followed by 90 miles the second day. Every 25 miles there is a rest stop where the cyclists can get free food, beverages and massages for their sore muscles. They spend the night at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Bourne, MA. This will be the 3rd year that Benovitz has ridden in the event and he is "psyched" to be joined this year by Miller who will be riding not only for the first time in the PMC, but in his first long distance cycling event ever. The two have been training together for the past few months and are really excited about participating in such an emotionally charged event. A vast majority of the riders, including both Erics are riding on behalf of family members and/or friends who have been effected by this disease. Since it is a bike-a-thon, both Erics are currently collecting sponsorships (i.e. MONEY) to support their ride. All of the riders are required to raise a minimum of $1200. In the past, Benovitz has been able to raise approximately $2500 each year and both Erics are each on their way to earning more this year. One strength of the PMC is that due to its low overhead and large number of volunteers, over 90% of money raised goes directly to the fight against cancer. If you are interested in sponsoring Eric and Eric (and I know you all are- right?!?!) you can contact them at [email protected] or [email protected]. For more information about riding in the PMC yourself or volunteering for the event, call 1-800-WE CYCLE or visiting their website at http://www.pmc.org. GOOD LUCK GUYS!! Stay tuned for a follow-up article in the next issue of the Spreadsheet. We'll have pictures and Eric and Eric will tell us how it went! Annie Mendell |
