FUN AROUND BU By Minh Phan On Friday September 18, 1998 the Asia GSM Club organized a small group of GSM students for an adventure with Boston Duck Tours. For us, it was our first time touring Boston and touring it while riding a "duck." No, we did not have to deal with smelly feathers or muddy webbed feet. Our "duck" was actually a $230,000 authentic, renovated World War II amphibious landing vehicle. Its wheels took us through the streets of Boston and Charlestown while its pedals propelled us along the Charles River into the vicinity of Cambridge. The day of our tour was crisp. The sun was bright and the temperature was in the sixties. Our conDUCKtor Vincent Van Duck, a.k.a. Dan Gile, offered us close to two hours of touring the best sights in and around Boston. As we marveled at the architectural wonders and enjoyed the fresh clean air, we also got a dose of history lessons from Dan. We all were pleasantly surprised to learn of many interesting tit bits about the city of Boston and the people who helped make it famous.
No doubt, the tour only scratched the surface of Boston. These and many other treasures are awaiting visitors as well as long-time locals to discover and enjoy. We hope that each one of us will take advantage of our time in the area to discover these treasures with Boston Duck Tours and other organized tour companies, with one another, or simply by ourselves. Lean On Me! Mentor Program In Full Swing at SMG by Annie Mendell
The Mentor Program, designed to be an aid to first year MBAs is going strong! This year, the mentor program effort was led by 2nd year MBA/MS-MIS student, James Mumma. The idea behind the program is to offer the new students a person to whom they can go to if they have any questions about the program, their classes or just about being a BUMBA student in general.
According to Mumma, "While there was a mentor program in place last year, not that many students took advantage of it." James, on the other hand, had a really positive experience with his mentor and wanted to make sure that this years class had the same.
About 70 2nd year MBA students volunteered to be mentors to the new 1st year students. Given the large size of the 1st year class, each mentor has, on average, been assigned about 3 students. The assignments came out about a week or two ago with the help of Janelle Heineke and Martha Cohen Barrett of the GPO.
Slowly but surely everyone is being contacted and the program seems to be popular among the students. So, if you are a 1st year and you have not yet met your mentor go ahead and reach out!! Thats what were here for. If you dont know who your mentor is, feel free to contact James at [email protected] for more information. |
